essential baby buys

Congratulations on your journey to motherhood! As a first-time Mum, you may find yourself overwhelmed by the seemingly endless list of essential baby buys. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to save money without compromising on quality. As a Mum of 3, I have been through my share of baby buys; some of which I have loved and some of which I felt were a waste of money.  In this blog post, we’ll explore which essential baby buys are worth investing in and which ones you can skip, while sharing some savvy tips to help you save those precious pounds.

1. The Cot:

A comfortable and safe sleeping space is crucial for your little one, but that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank. Consider buying a convertible cot that grows with your baby, saving you the expense of purchasing a toddler bed later on. Additionally, opt for a cot without unnecessary features like built-in changing tables, as these can significantly increase the price without adding much value. It is also worth looking at local selling pages as second hand cots are fantastic value and then you can spend a bit more on a great quality mattress; the bit that really matters!

We opted for the Mokee Mini Cot Bed and have loved it.  It is small enough that it fit in our bedroom and meant we didn’t need to splurge on a co-sleeper or moses basket.  It also converts to a bed meaning you can get a good 3+ years out of the purchase.  I love the simple Scandi design and they are amazing quality.  It is one of my best essential baby buys.

2. The Pushchair:

When it comes to pushchairs, the options are endless. However, it’s essential to strike a balance between functionality and cost. Look for lightweight and easy-to-fold models that can adapt to different terrains. Consider buying a second-hand pushchair from your local selling page. Usually all the fabric can be removed and washed and the chassis can be easily jet washed meaning your second hand pram can look brand new. So, if you have your heart set on a Bugaboo or Uppababy but don’t want to blow your budget secondhand is the way to go.  I have loved our Baby Jogger City Mini for all 3 of my little ones but didn’t start using it until they were around 9 months.  I bought my secondhand for a fraction of the cost and it is still going strong!

3. The Car Seat:

Safety is paramount when it comes to car seats, and it’s crucial to choose a reliable option that meets current safety regulations. While you should never compromise on safety, you can still find affordable car seats that offer excellent protection for your little one. Consider buying car seats during sales or looking for discounts online. Additionally, some retailers offer discounts; it is worth signing up to parenting clubs.  I saved on one of our car seats using the Boots Parenting Club discount and also earned points on the purchase.

4. Buying Second Hand:

One of the most effective ways to save money on baby buys is by purchasing second-hand items. From clothing to toys, there are plenty of online platforms and local baby markets where you can find gently used items at a fraction of the retail price. Check out facebook for your local Mum to Mum marketing or NCT nearly new sale.  Babies and toddlers go through clothes so quickly that it is worth checking out Vinted for clothing bundles rather than paying out for new.  The only item I wouldn’t recommend buying second hand is a car seat; you need to be certain of the safety on this one.

5. Lending Libraries:

Another fantastic resource for saving money is baby sling lending libraries. Baby slings can be quite expensive, and your baby might outgrow them quickly. Instead of purchasing a brand-new sling, consider borrowing one from a lending library near you. This way, you can try different types and styles without committing to a hefty price tag.

6. Avoiding Unnecessary Products:

While it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of preparing for your baby’s arrival, it’s essential to avoid spending money on unnecessary products. Some items marketed as must-haves may end up gathering dust. For instance, baby wipe warmers, nappy bin systems, and fancy nursery decorations are often unnecessary expenses. Prioritise essential items and resist the urge to buy things that won’t have a significant impact on your baby’s well-being.

7. Baby Monitor:

While a baby monitor can provide peace of mind, there are budget-friendly options available that offer excellent functionality. Skip the high-end models with unnecessary features like video screens and opt for a simple audio monitor instead. Alternatively, consider using a smartphone app that turns your phone into a baby monitor, saving you the cost of purchasing a separate device and is totally portable.

8. Changing Table:

Investing in a dedicated changing table may seem like a necessity, but it’s not always the most cost-effective option. Instead, consider using a changing pad placed on top of a sturdy dresser or repurposing a sturdy table with storage space. This way, you can save money and still have a practical and safe changing area for your baby.  I found that I changed my baby on the floor 99% of the time; they can’t roll and fall from the floor so it is much safer!

9. Baby Bath:

Baby baths can be convenient, they are not essential. Instead of purchasing a separate baby bath, you can use a clean sink or a get in the bath with them.  It is a lovely opportunity to bond with your baby and helps keep them warm and calmer if they are with you in the bath.  I have found as soon as baby starts sitting, baby baths and supports are abandoned.  As it is only used for such a short time, it is a good place to save money.

10. Baby Shoes

It’s tempting to buy adorable tiny shoes for your little one, but the truth is that babies don’t need shoes until they start walking. Save money by skipping the baby shoes in the early months and instead get some soft, breathable socks or booties to keep their feet warm and protected.

Conclusion:

Preparing for your baby’s arrival is an exciting time, but it doesn’t have to drain your bank account. By being strategic with your purchases, considering second-hand options, and avoiding unnecessary products, you can save money without compromising on your little one’s needs. Remember, what matters most is the love and care you provide, not the price tag attached to every baby item.
